Hannah you have to realize this movie was from the 90s. The "overdoing" was simply super-stylizing which was typical in that decade. Ash's comparison to Van Helsing and the Matrix was quite apt. I knew Ash would LOVE this movie. It's so his type.

Wow stand by me is a beautiful piece of cinema history as a kid i loved this move a christmas story and the sandlot. And no matter how old i get it brings back such nostalgia. Human sacrifice was very common, not just in America, but worldwide even in Europe. Because human life was the most precious, so they believed human blood would help in times of famine etc. It was the state religion. We think it’s cruel and disgusting, but it’s layers to this not depicted in this movie, as this is Hollywood after all made by a white man😬 Also how is it anymore different than animal sacrifice? Same thing. In Europe they sacrificed children and slaves, drowning them in lakes, burry them with their king/master for the afterlife along with horses etc. Of course not everyone did this, and it was usually done to neighboring kingdoms/city states or lesser tribes like these ones in the jungle. Also a different time a different view on life and humans. No such thing as human rights. Your social class was all that mattered. Also they are portrayed very one sided here, evil vs good etc. But in reality this was life, this was their culture and religion. They would only treat their own fellow family and tribal members with love and compassion. Outsiders was a different story. Also how is it any more different than soldiers going to war killing people, but normalized as okay because it was an enemy, yet when they come home they are celebrated as heroes!
